steve frisco, of serie limitee fame, brings us the latest bundle of hot tracks to hit wax classic in 2014. as the title suggests, steve takes us on a journey through low fidelity sounds and production techniques. think dark, moody, yet crunchy basement house tracks with inspiration taken from all over the u.s and the rest of the house world. it’s a generous offering as well. six whole dusty tunes for those diggers who are looking for something with a bit more range than another record of generic piano laden, house-by-numbers pieces that still seem to be flooding the record store shelves in 2014. the moods do vary from track to track, but they remain very reflective and almost melancholic at points. the title track, ‘adventure in lo-fi’, is the deepest of the lot with filtered chords, echoing claps and a sporadic kick pattern that often clears way for the track’s bass hits. now, compare that to ‘da brooklyn beat’. whilst the former had a distinct sunrise/sunset kind of feel to it, the latter is definitely more of a club affair. skippy snare hits and a strong organ lead the track on, and at the risk of utilizing very overused buzzwords such as ‘raw’ and ‘ruff’, this track, and the rest of the a-side for that matter, certainly captures that essence. stalwart wax classic fans will no doubt be picking this one up to add to their collection. however, i strongly recommend this ep as a jumping in point to the label for any newcomers out there

dynamic uk duo him_self_her are back on the essential crosstown rebels with another bumping deep house burner ‘love you like i used to once again featuring the distinctive vocal chops of kieran fowkes who also appeared on previous crosstown hit gone too long. featuring a tough and distorted remix from hot property francesca lombardo and the driving cosmic force of uk disco darlings psychemagik on the flip, this is a house track for the peak season of al fresco hands-in-the-air dancefloors.

if you re going to beat em down, you need the right tools. on the label s second release, grimy trax has given you a couple hammers. the a-side, dejay cease s the fixer is straight chicago. we re talking banging 909 funk that might be found buried on a particularly unhinged ron hardy mix. a simple bass line and two notes of acid are all it takes to make the floor go wild. this is functional heat with enough atmosphere to engage the mind, body and soul. on the b-side, rising chicago son boogienite proves he s earned the hype. boy, ok is an instant classic thanks to some recognizable disco strings and a funky escalator of a bassline. the producer uses a trippy, rubberband synth which eventually turns into rhythmic, teasing vocal. the mixdown is ridiculous, especially as the lengthy track passes the halfway mark. boogie brings the bassline in and out in between beautiful ambient rhodes and a call and response male and female vocal. those strings hit again and you feel no pain.

mystical and proper techno! -marbacka- is a song originally written and composed by marbacka for one of their side projects, -the marbacka side project-. it was later made famous by another recording artist, who covered the song and released it as the second single from hen second studio album. however, not until this artist recorded and produced the version along with $ it become a worldwide hit. a music video, which has been described as iconic, was shot and received heavy rotation. its feelings explore an abandoned lover s point of view. on this special edition -marbacka- is surrounded by previously unreleased material and reworks.

london-based producer and rinse fm associate rupert taylor, aka xxxy, has announced his second release for the rinse label, featuring a pair of characteristically melody soaked, floor ready house tracks. it is the follow up to 2013s incendiary club hit *got me so*, and is the latest in a series of releases from taylor exploring ghostly house and garage for labels including infrasonics, ten thousand yen and orca.

the last few years have seen chicago footwork rise to international success, and traxmans debut album - *the mind of traxman* on planet mu - played no small part in that. it showcased cornelius fergusons brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of footworks house-derived beat science. the selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on traxman s abilities. instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.

after the very successful foray into split eps, luv shack records continues to explore this concept with luv013. the ep sees upcoming duo space echo make a return after their smash hit -soul power-, while the b-side is conducted by wahlberliner rotciv. -come back home-, the opening track by space echo, is a slowly building but effortlessly captivating piece of hypnotic house music with a raw funk attitude. the gently evolving synth line and the strong vocal hook are the spine of this anthemic track. the seemingly laid back -hangover- just oozes b-movie sleaze and might be space echos little hommage to 60 s lounge music, with an array of distorted guitars and soft pads coming to good use. that is until the synth theme kicks in mid-track and turns the piece into a late night weapon.
